US Puts Nigeria On Religious Blacklist

Kai! Nigeria has been declared a “Country of Particular Concern” for religious freedom, alongside nations like China, Iran, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia.

This addition to a blacklist on religious freedom by the United States means potential sanctions if Nigeria does not improve its record.

According to the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo Nigeria joins the list alongside Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, the DPRK, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan as countries of concern under the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 for engaging systematic, ongoing, egregious religious freedom violations.

However, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has come up to dismiss the allegation as untrue.

In the statement, he says the allegation is “a case of an honest disagreement between the two nations on the causes of violence in Nigeria”.

This is so not encouraging and really very sad for us as a country....*deep sigh*
